Richard Thomas – Founding Trustee

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Richard Thomas, affectionately known to all as ‘Dic y Fet’, one of the founding trustees of the Cadwgan Building Preservation Trust and a much-loved figure in the story of the restoration of Cardigan Castle.

Richard was one of a small group of passionate local voices who believed deeply in the importance of preserving Cardigan Castle for future generations. At a time when the future of the historic site was uncertain, he was among those who steadfastly helped lay the foundations for its restoration, renewal and rebirth as a place of heritage, culture and community.

Dic was one of the founding trustees of the Cadwgan Trust in 2000. He played a particularly key role in enlisting support from the community to raise the Match Funding required to draw down grant support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Welsh European Funding. He was key in the initial action to purchase Ty Castell which led to the creation of ‘1176’ as a restaurant.

His commitment to the Castle was rooted not only in a love of history and for the people of Cardigan and the surrounding area, but in a profound sense of place and belonging. He understood what Cardigan Castle meant to the town and to the wider community, and he gave generously of his time, energy and support to help secure its future.

Beyond his official role, he will be remembered with great affection by all who knew him. His character, his wonderful humour; commitment, and local pride left a lasting impression, and his passing will be deeply felt by many.
