The Regency Vegetable Garden

The place to grow and flourish.

Originally, the Castle’s vegetable gardens would have provided the residents of Castle Green House kitchens with produce. Today the crops grown are used by the Castle’s onsite restaurant, 1176, and reflect their seasonal availability when growing vegetables and soft fruit.

In the large glass house heritage varieties of tomato are grown along with chillies. The garden beds are abundant in summer with leeks, kale, radish, swedes, parsnips and brussel sprouts flourishing here.

In the small orchard nestled behind the row of houses facing the street, apples which are varieties linked to nearby St Dogmaels Abbey hang heavy on the bough. Sheltered by the remains of the Tower, soft fruits such as blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberry bushes enjoy the sun above the low-sitting lush red strawberries. This year we have invested in a soft fruit cage to protect the fruit form the myriad of birds who spend a Sunday morning depleting the crops!
